Lily Allen is no stranger to creating some delicious drama and controversy. Following the release of singles "Hard Out Here", which carried its on racial criticism weight, along with the light "Air Balloon" and "Our Time", the UK rebel presents "Sheezus", the title track off her upcoming album of the same name, as the effort's official fourth single ahead of its anticipated release in May.
"Sheezus", already a humorous title parody of Kanye West's latest, bloated album, is a piece of comedic pop where Allen name drops A-list pop stars including Rihanna, Katy Perry, Lorde and Lady Gaga. Though many news outlets have reported the track and accompanying music video as an attack on the mentioned musicians, it actually works in the complete opposite manner, as a compliment to the ladies while calling the numerous comparisons they face "embarrassing" and "dumb".
The track contains anti-pop lyrics, as Allen has said on multiple occasions how she has even been unhappy with the music industry these days, calling even her recent offerings lackluster. "RiRi isn't scared of Katy Perry's roaring, Queen B's going back to the drawing, Lorde smells blood yeah she's about to slay you, kid ain't one to fuck with when she's only on her debut, We're all watching Gaga, lol and haha, dying for the art so really she's a martyr," she spits on the chorus before saying she wants the musical crown. A demand that will have many fan bases up in arms for all the wrong reasons.
Allen's accompanying video for "Sheezus" is pretty simple and colorful compared to her recent visuals. There's no hilarious story line, no twerking background dancers, no hot dog costumes, just the artist in front of a green screen as dark and creepy gold drawings appear. The trippy music video all leads up to Allen showing her true side. She may be "born again", but it is not as a sweet angel, she's coming for all your favorites. In the end, it's another release only Lily could pull off.
