Local dress drive provides free prom dresses - MyStateline.com Posted: 23 Mar 2019 04:20 PM PDT ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) - It's officially prom season across the stateline. With the warm temperatures on the horizon, young women everywhere are gearing up for one of the most important rites of passages, prom. For some, that special dress can cost too much, but that's where Becca's Closet steps in.
After a tragic car crash claimed the life of 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman, her parents wanted to continue her legacy one dress at a time.
"We want to keep Rebecca's memory alive in the comfort of our hearts and in minds of communities across the country," Rebecca's mom Pam Kirtman said. "It is a comfort to us."
Kirtman says the idea originated from Rebecca who wanted to help other girls.
"The idea came from our daughter Rebecca who created a dress drive when she was a freshmen in high school to donate dresses to the girls in her high school and after getting a big donation from a company she was able to expand her reach and donate dresses to over 250 girls," Kirtman said.
Now with over 70 different chapters across the country, the one in rockford is one of the most successful chapters.
"We have 2,800 dresses in stock right now," Executive Director of the Rockford Area Lutheran Ministries Amy Hoenig said.
Rebecca's parents came to visit the rockford chapter to see what keeps young women coming here year after year.
"The city of rockford is so wonderful," Hoenig said. "We have dress drives that go on, we have people who donate them."
Hoenig sees first-hand how these gowns make each woman feel like Cinderella, without even needing a fairy godmother.
"When a girl comes through here to get a dress, some of them have never worn a formal gown before and they gain in confidence and grow and how they feel about themselves and it's really fun to see them come through a try on different dresses until they find their right dress, so getting the right dress and being able to attend prom gives everyone the same quality and gives everyone the same experiences," Hoenig said.
Sky Miller says having all the options with Becca's Closet makes life easier when it comes to preparing for prom.
"Dresses can get really expensive and you don't use them very often," Senior at Harlem High School Sky Miller said. "Not a lot of kids can work up the money they need to purchase a really expensive elegant gown like they would like to have,"
Becca's Closet is open Saturday mornings until May 4th for the prom season. If you have a gown just sitting in your closet waiting for the right occasion to be worn, consider donating it. You can drop them off at any A-1 cleaners and they will clean them before giving them to Becca's Closet here in town.
Beginning on March 30th, Macy's is matching a dress for their shoppers. Anyone who buys one of Macy's special occasion dresses, Macy's is donating one to Becca's Closet. |
Rivergate Goodwill has deals on wedding, prom dresses - WSMV Nashville Posted: 23 Mar 2019 05:59 PM PDT The Goodwill store at Rivergate is having its annual prom and wedding dress sale. More than 200 wedding dresses and dozens of bridesmaid and prom dresses are available at the store. The gowns are available for under $200. Most dresses are under $100, just as prom season begins. One future bride found her perfect wedding dress. "I think the one I have now is $119. The one I tried on at David's Bridal was a huge difference, like a $600-$700 difference," said Morgan Vickers. "Looks the same to me, same quality, looks really good. Just a little bit of wear and tear, but nothing that can't be fixed." Jewelry and accessories are also available at the Goodwill store. The sale will end when all the dresses are sold. |
Hundreds of prom dresses donated to high school girls - WBRZ Posted: 23 Mar 2019 07:50 PM PDT BATON ROUGE - Prom is on the horizon, and one local organization is making sure young women have the opportunity to pick out a dress at no cost for their special night. "When you see the young lady find the dress that she wants it's just so rewarding," said LeJeanne Harris, the founder, and director of the No Glass Slipper Prom Dress Giveaway project. To help those young ladies find their perfect prom dress; this Sunday Harris will be holding a Dress Giveaway. "The whole thing is being women, empowering our youth and making young ladies who otherwise can't afford to go to prom be able to have that experience," Harris said. This will be No Glass Slipper's 7th giveaway. This year Harris collected nearly a thousand gowns with help from sponsors and the community. Lejeanne says to collect this many gowns, it's all about team effort. "Life is not a fairy tale. The fairy godmother is not going to show up, but people who care can help make a difference, so just ordinary people in the community who go into the closet and donate us a dress, those all make a difference and allow us to do what we do," Harris said. The event has served more than 700 girls since 2013 and continues to grow. Harris says it's hard work, but it's all worth it. "It's just a good time for the girls, and a good time for us," Harris said. The prom dress giveaway will be Sunday at McKinley High Alumni Center from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. If you would like to join the team and volunteer click here |
Linthicum library hosts prom dress 'Glow Up' - CapitalGazette.com Posted: 23 Mar 2019 01:30 PM PDT People swirled around Madison Gaffney Saturday morning as she looked through rows of bracelets, necklaces and earrings in search of a set to accompany the black sequined dress under her arm. Her prom date Sara DiPietro ran over with a can of silver spray-on hair glitter she found. Her mom held up two jeweled hoop earrings to her lobes. "I'm really excited," Gaffney, the Annapolis High senior, said. It's The Glow Up -- the Anne Arundel County Public Library system's first prom dress giveaway. The event, held at Linthicum Community Library Saturday, drew people from Harford and Baltimore counties as well. Public, private and home-schooled students all came to get a formal dress and accessories. Programming and outreach librarian Kt Zawodny said more than 450 dresses were available Saturday. Some still had tags on them. There were also heels, jewelry and makeup available. "We thought it'd be a great way to support the pockets of poverty that exist in our county, and really leverage the resources that are available," Zawodny said. Support local journalism. Subscribe to The Capital. » The library stocked The Glow Up with donations from the community, as well as a donation of 100 dresses from Helping Hands of America, Inc. in Odenton. The event provides a free option to get formal wear for what is normally a costly occasion, and it's also green, Zawodny said -- the dresses are being reused. "A lot of people care about environmental sustainability," she said. "A lot of prom dresses end up in the landfill." Maryuri Ortiz was looking for a light-colored, subtle prom dress with her date Justin Collinson Saturday. She had picked out a lavender piece with a matching shawl. "I go thrifting a lot. The idea of using an old dress, I'm all for it," she said. Zawodny said they have been thinking about a free prom dress event for a couple years, and have seen other libraries do something similar. She partnered with Linthicum library associate Katrina Threat to pull it off. In the future they hope to include men's wear as well. North County High School senior Madison Roberts had four dresses picked out to try on Saturday — one with stars, one with flowers, a red dress with a faux-diamond waistband and a pink gown. She said she's a fashionista, and she's excited to dress up for prom. She ultimately selected the flower dress, a two-piece with a white bodice. A lot of people in the community, especially her neighborhood of Brooklyn Park, don't have much, she said. She thinks it is cool that others stepped up to help. "People who can't exactly afford designer dresses and stuff, and designer shoes, they can actually have a chance at going to prom," she said. "That means everybody gets to go to prom no matter how big or small your budget is. And I think that's amazing." The library also had a volunteer seamstress on site to make alterations to the gowns at no charge. "It takes a lot of pressure off families," Elizabeth Chapman said of the free dresses. She makes costumes for a living, and said the quick turnarounds Saturday will help prepare her for an upcoming show. "It's nice to see that the dresses are getting a second home," she said. |
Local schools collaborate to provide students with affordable prom dresses - WKBN.com Posted: 23 Mar 2019 12:41 PM PDT SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) - A local student project between West Branch and Salem Hgh School is looking to make prom more affordable for classmates. Project Prom helps girls in need of a dress for the dance. The dresses are free and allow girls to choose their prom attire. Two students working with the program explained how it works. "High school girls can come in and get a prom dress for free. All the dresses are donated," said Halle Cochran from Salem High School. "It's encouraged that you give the dresses back because really you only use them once and you return them so that other people can use them," said Gloriana Maendel from West Branch High School. The event is taking place at the administration building in Salem. There is a variety of sizes and styles available. The building is open between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. For more information, call 330-332-0316. |
