Crimson Peak is one of the lesser efforts of Guillermo del Toro. But lesser del Toro is still better than 90% of what gets released everyday in theaters. Gruesome and ever-so gory, Crimson Peak is a nice throwback to old school Gothic horror films. As always with del Toro, you can see the love and commitment to his artistic vision with every frame. But much of the film feels like a rehash of The Devil's Backbone (2001) what with the ghosts of ambiguous allegiance warning a fish-out-of-water protagonist about impending doom and disaster. There was a bit too much CGI for my tastes, but del Toro used it to accentuate his film instead of relying on it to establish tone and atmosphere.
