Hers was a preposterous story that the press gobbled up like paint chips. The Washington Free Beacon followed up on the story, and came away with a possible murder mystery.
Reuters reported on March 25, "An Arizona man has died and his wife is in critical condition after they ingested chloroquine phosphate -- an aquarium cleaning product similar to drugs that have been named by President Trump as potential treatments for corona virus infection."
The press loved the story because they get to blame Donald John Trump for a death, and because the story cast shade on a drug the president had said could be a game changer. The press does not want a game changer because they do not want the game to end.
The story line was bumpkins who listened to President Trump died or were hospitalized.
As I said, the Free Beacon was having none of this.
On March 30, the Free Beacon reported, "The Arizona woman who said that she and her 68-year-old husband ingested a substance used to clean fish tanks after hearing President Donald Trump tout chloroquine as a cure for the corona virus has given thousands of dollars to Democratic groups and candidates over the last two years.
"The woman's most recent donations, in late February, were to a Democratic PAC, the 314 Action Fund, that bills itself as the 'pro-science resistance' and has vocally criticized the Trump administration's response to the corona virus pandemic and held up her case to slam the White House.
"Although local and national media outlets withheld the couple's names, the Washington Free Beacon established their identities through descriptions in local news reports, where the pair were identified by their first names and ages: Gary, 68, and Wanda, 61. The Free Beacon is withholding their identities at Wanda's request."
That red flag went ignored by the press, which anymore is our Ministry of Disinformation. Why would someone who hates President Trump take his advice?
Nearly a month passed before the inevitable follow up story.
The Free Beacon reported on Tuesday, "The Mesa City Police Department's homicide division is investigating the death of Gary Lenius, the Arizona man whose wife served him soda mixed with fish tank cleaner in what she claimed was a bid to fend off the corona virus. A detective handling the case confirmed the investigation to the Washington Free Beacon on Tuesday after requesting a recording of the Free Beacon's interviews with Lenius's wife, Wanda.
"Gary Lenius, 68, died on March 22. Wanda, 61, told several news outlets last month that both she and her husband had ingested a substance used to clean aquariums after hearing President Donald Trump tout one of its ingredients, chloroquine phosphate, from the White House briefing room.
"Detective Teresa Van Galder, the homicide detective handling the case for the Mesa City Police Department, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing but declined to provide additional details."
The media is stonewalling this homicide investigation. If a reporter for a small web site in Washington can uncover a story like this, why can't ABC? CBS? Fox News? Et cetera.
The answer is they do not want to know.
They do not want readers to know.
I mean, as of this moment, the Associated Press has not even filed a rewrite.
To be fair to Wanda Linius, maybe she and her engineer husband so panicked that they forgot their hatred for President Trump and their mocking of his knowledge of science that they took aquarium cleaner to stave off a pandemic.
I do not know much about journalism except that there is always more to the story. And they are stories. All of them.
